Wintertide
"I held that music in my mind
and could not sleep"
--Kristen Hanlon
as matter, as form, as cloud, as ash
as moon, as mine, as keening hawk
all being impassions and imparadises
the secret, knowing life
its cast and plan, its mettle and mind
it was the thought above the thought
that kept us combing
through the brambly unfinished field
it was a hare stood on its solid haunch
above the line of thistle beard
waiting its heart to settle down
to know, to be, to run again
the eye-raked terrain of vacancy,
of fearsome, dominating things
